Toto is a great American classic rock band which was established in Los Angeles, California in 1977. They were initially musically active between 1977 and 2008, then once more between 2010 and 2019 and once again since 2020 onwards. Their music is a mixture of arena rock, pop rock, hard rock, jazz fusion, and progressive rock. They are best known for hit songs such as Africa or Rosanna, both from their fourth studio album entitled Toto IV and released in 1982 by Columbia Records. In addition, they are also known for Hold the Line, a song from their debut self-titled debut studio album which was released in 1978. Overall, their complex music deals with themes of love, romance, and heartbreak but also existential issues, the passage of time, mortality, and a series of sociopolitical subjects. Back during their heyday, they were one of the best-selling American musical groups. The band had also received a series of Grammy Awards and was inducted in the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009.

The complexity of their music shines through both the hits and the lesser-known songs. They actually intended to be remembered as a progressive rock band and were influenced by Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant or Emerson, Lake & Palmer (ELP for short). Throughout their impressive and successful career which spanned over multiple decades, the band released a total number of 14 studio albums as follows (listed in chronological order):
- Toto (1978)
- Hydra (1979)
- Turn Back (1981)
- Toto IV (1982)
- Isolation (1984)
- Fahrenheit (1986)
- The Seventh One (1988)
- Kingdom of Desire (1992)
- Tambu (1995)
- Mindfields (1999)
- Through the Looking Glass (2002)
- Falling in Between (2006)
- Toto XIV (2015)
- Old Is New (2018)
In addition, the band also composed (for the most part) the soundtrack of the film Dune (1984). This was their first and only soundtrack that they ever composed. Three of their albums have a partial jazz fusion (or jazz rock) sound, more their eponymous debut studio album from 1978, Through the Looking Glass from 2002, and Toto XIV from 2015. On a personal note, I must also share the fact that I have very pleasant and beautiful memories listening to the music of this great band since my early teenage onwards, both on radio, on the internet, or on my iPhone or iPad. I continued to listen to them well into my time as an international student in Aalborg, Denmark during the late 2010s. Moral of the story: hold the line, love isn’t always on time. 😉
