The Lost Tapes – A Fan-Made Documentary On Jaco Pastorius

The Lost Tapes‘ is the title of a popular fan-made documentary on the amazing life and career of fantastic, revolutionary, highly creative, and innovative American bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius which was uploaded on Youtube relatively recently in 2021. The work process for the documentary initially started many years ago, more specifically way back in 2006, when three amazing fans of Jaco, namely Nico, Chris, and François, commenced to produce an independent documentary film on their own celebrating the astonishing yet tragic life and career of amazing American bassist Jaco Pastorius.

The following independent, fan-produced documentary film highlights Jaco’s approach to music, his artistic creativity as well as musical heritage which has tremendously influenced and continues to influence countless fans from many generations who even want to take one step further and become bassists themselves. The team of three devoted Jaco fans waited for the arrival in France of several very important musicians during the late 2000s who had previously worked with him and knew him in person. Those respective musicians were as follows: Marcus Miller (American multi-instrumentalist), Joe Zawinul (frontman and co-founder of the legendary American jazz rock/jazz fusion band Weather Report), Peter Erskine (drummer at some point in Weather Report in a line-up that included Jaco Pastorius as well), Dave Carpenter (bassist), and Paco Sery (world music and jazz fusion drummer who had also collaborated with Zawinul).

Thanks to the goodwill of the aforementioned great musicians as well as to the support of some companies who had lent the three fans their recording equipment, the independent fan-made documentary below was slowly but steadily taking shape and in the process of being self-produced by the three fans. Nevertheless, at some point in 2008, the audio-video recordings for the documentary were lost… until 2021, when they were found again on a seemingly broken hard drive in an attic by one of the fans, more specifically Nico and the subsequently uploaded and published publicly on Youtube.

Therefore, the great, independent, and fan-made as well as fan-produced documentary film below unveils beautiful testimonies on the life and musical career of Jaco Pastorius by fellow musicians he knew him and collaborated with him throughout the passing of time. Without any further needless ado on my behalf, I wholeheartedly recommend integrally watching the following documentary film down below. Enjoy and all the best!
