Ugly Kid Joe – A Great American Hard Rock Band

Ugly Kid Joe is a great American rock band formed in 1989 in Isla Vista, California. Their music is a mixture of several sub-genres of music, more specifically hard rock, heavy metal, alternative metal, and funk metal. They were initially musically active between 1989 and 2007 before they disbanded for many years until 2010, when they started performing again to the present day. They experienced commercial success and popularity during the early 1990s with the first releases from their discography, namely As Ugly as They Wanna Be and America’s Least Wanted. The roots of this band can be traced to two talented young musicians who grew up in Palo Alto, California, that is Whitfield Crane (the lead vocalist of the band) and Klaus Eichstadt (one of the guitarists of the group). In addition to being described as a hard rock, heavy metal, alternative metal, and funk metal band, Ugly Kid Joe were also labelled as pop metal, glam metal, and even grunge. One could even go as far as to partially call them ‘parody rock’, although this is obviously an oversimplification of their complex style.

Their major musical influences are represented by 1970s and 1980s classic rock and heavy metal, ranging from AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Motörhead, and Van Halen to other legendary rock bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers and Mötley Crüe, particularly influential for the band’s mixture of funk and metal. Throughout the passage of time, the band went through some line-up changes, but the two constant members have always been founders Whitfield Crane (the frontman and lead vocalist of the group) and Klaus Eichstadt (the lead guitarist of the group).

These talented, technical, funny, and charismatic Californian rockers managed to release 5 studio albums to date as follows:

  • America’s Least Wanted (1992)
  • Menace to Sobriety (1995)
  • Motel California (1996)
  • Uglier Than They Used ta Be (2015)
  • Rad Wings of Destiny (2022)

In addition, they also released two EPs (i.e. extended-plays):

  • As Ugly as They Wanna Be (1991)
  • Stairway to Hell (2012)

A particular important fact about the band’s discography is the fact that their 1991 EP As Ugly as They Wanna Be was the first EP to go double platinum in the US, as certified by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). The touching and bittersweet ballad Cats in the Cradle is a cover version of the classic folk rock song Cat’s in the Cradle by Harry Chapin which was released on his 4th studio album entitled Verities & Balderdash in 1974. Otherwise, in terms of their discography, Ugly Kid Joe released a total number of 17 singles and 15 music videos as well as 2 compilations.

Below you can listen to my personal selection of favourite songs from their discography. I truly hope you will like listening (or re-listening) to them as I still do and did over the many years that I’ve been listening to them. Thank you very much for your time, attention, and readership! All the best and rock on! 🙂 🤘

This song is dedicated to all cool busy bees out there! You rock! Keep up the good work, whatever you do!
