The material for this legendary classic rock studio album was conceived, for the most part, at the historic Whisky a Go Go nightclub in Los Angeles. The band was eventually interdicted to perform again at this club (being fired by the club’s manager). Eventually, they signed with Elektra Records and started the recording sessions for what would later on become their debut LP (and a cornerstone musical masterpiece in the history of rock music and in the history of music in general).

Stylistically, the album includes influences from a wide musical palette, more specifically jazz, blues, classical music, pop, or R&B. After it was released, it propelled the band to global stardom and paved the way for a series of other highly-influential albums that they released throughout the late 1960s, managing to create a solid legacy within the American counterculture of the time. Furthermore, the album is still a major source of artistic and cultural inspiration for many artists and fans around the world. In commercial regards, it is the band’s best-selling album, having sold more than 13 million copies as of 2015. It was also in 2015 that the Library of Congress chose this album to be included in the National Recording Registry given the fact that it is “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”. In terms of critical acclaim, the album was named one of the greatest in rock music history by BBC or Rolling Stone magazine.

The Doors’ self-titled debut studio album encapsulates themes of intellectual rebellion, Greek mythology (as can be clearly observed in the lyrics of the Oedipal song The End), love/romance, or the passage of time (i.e. the song End of the Night). The inspiration for the song The End is represented by the loss of friendship according to the frontman and poet of the band, Jim Douglas Morrison. The album consists of two sides, the first one with 6 songs while the other one with 5. The entire tracklist of the album is as follows:

  1. Break On Through (To the Other Side)
