Joe Bonamassa – A Great American Blues Rock Guitarist

Joe Bonamassa is a great American blues rock virtuoso guitarist, singer, and songwriter born on 8 May, 1977 in New Hartford, New York. He has been featured on the covers of guitar magazines for years. According to Guitar World magazine, he is considered ‘arguably the world’s biggest blues guitarist’. He went professional very early on in his life, more specifically at the age of twelve when he opened for the legendary late blues rock guitarist B. B. King. B. B. King saw a lot of potential in the child prodigy Joe Bonamassa and praised him in the following manner: ‘Bonamassa’s just good. One of a kind. The kind that will be a legend before he’s 25.‘ Joe Bonamassa’s music is a cool, authentic, touching, and energetic mixture of blues rock, hard rock, blues, and rock and roll. He has been realising his solo studio albums through his own label called since J&R Adventures. So far, he released 17 solo studio albums. His latest studio album is titled Breakthrough and was released in 2025.

Throughout his impressive musical career, Joe Bonamassa collaborated with other important blues rock artists, for example Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Paul Rodgers (of Free and Bad Company fame), and Beth Hart. In addition, he also holds a very special record, namely the record for most number 1 blues albums (totalling 29 under his belt thus far, or 30, if the collaborative compilation B.B. King’s Blues Summit 100: Celebrating the King of the Blues released in February, 2026 is to be included as well, a truly commending feat). Up until this point in time, this highly talented and technical guitarist received five Grammy Awards nominations.

Joe Bonamassa, who is of Italian ancestry, started playing on guitar at the very early age of 4, being supported by his father, a great fan of classic rock music, including the legendary guitarists Eric Clapton (of Cream and Derek & The Dominos fame) and Jeff Beck (of Yardbirds fame). At the age of 11, Joe Bonamassa was instructed by the eclectic American guitarist Danny Gatton (a virtuoso who is notable for mixing blues, rockabilly, jazz, and country to create a brand new musical style which he referred to as ‘redneck jazz’, a term coined by guitarist Evan Johns). One year later, he started his own band called Smokin’ Joe Bonamassa with which he toured across western New York and Pennsylvania on weekends. Back in 1989, he opened for B. B. Kings for approximately 20 concerts. By the age of 18, Joe Bonamassa switched to another band known as Bloodline in which he played with the sons of Miles Davis, Robby Krieger (of The Doors) and Berry Oakley. Even though this band did not achieve great heights in terms of fame, it was successful enough to put young Joe Bonamassa in the spotlight he deserved. His signature electric guitar is an Epiphone blue Les Paul. He is also known for his collection of guitars and amplifiers.

As of August 2026, Joe Bonamassa’s solo discography consists of 17 studio albums, 21 live albums, 83 singles, 16 video albums, and 32 music videos. In addition, he also released 5 collaborative albums. His solo studio albums are the following ones (listed in chronological order):

Below you can listen to four of my all-time favourite songs from his discography, more specifically from a very dear studio album of mine from his solo discography entitled Dust Bowl (which is a direct reference to, unfortunately, a very sad period of time in US and Canadian history during which prairies were massively hit by dust storms, extreme droughts, and widespread economic disasters throughout the 1930s, a major crisis which overlapped onto that of the Great Depression; the affected US states were Colorado, Kansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico).
