The Rascals – A Great American Classic Rock Band

The Rascals (initially known as The Young Rascals) were a great American classic rock and blue-eyed soul band which was quite popular during the 1960s, particularly between 1966 and 1968. They formed in 1965 in Garfield, New Jersey. During the late 1960s, the band had a string of hits which gained popularity and charted very well in the Billboard Hot 100, more specifically Good Lovin’ (1966), Groovin’ (1967), A Girl Like You (1967), People Got to Be Free (1968), How Can I Be Sure? (1967) and A Beautiful Morning (1968). The Rascals are notable for their good vibes represented by both the fine instrumentation of their songs as well as the catchy lyrics. It’s precisely this very beautiful musical mix that propelled them to global stardom during the 1960s. They also incorporated other genres of music into their overall sound, namely rhythm and blues (R&B), Motown, Afro-Cuban music, and garage rock as well as, later on, jazz and funk.

The original (or founding) line-up of the band consisted of lead vocalist and keyboardist Felix Cavaliere, vocalist David Brigati (backing and ocassional lead vocals), vocalist and percussionist Eddie Brigati, drummer Dino Danelli as well as guitarist and vocalist Gene Cornish. It must be mentioned that Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati composed most of the musical group’s original material. The band was initially known as The Young Rascals between 1965 and 1968. They were initially musically active between 1965 and 1972. They briefly re-united in 1988, 1997, and 2010. Then they briefly performed once more between 2012 and 2013 before disbanding. Fast forward approximately a decade later, the group resumed their musical activity since 2022 onwards, with the sole founding or original members still performing together being Felix Cavaliere and Gene Cornish. The Rascals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 (guitarist Steven Van Zandt of the Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band giving the induction speech). They were also inducted in the Hit Parade Hall of Fame in 2010.

Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, the Rascals released 9 studio albums as follows (listed in chronological order):

  • The Young Rascals (1966)
  • Collections (1966)
  • Groovin’ (1967)
  • Once Upon a Dream (1968)
  • Freedom Suite (1969)
  • See (1969)
  • Search and Nearness (1971)
  • Peaceful World (1971)
  • The Island of Real (1972)

The song It’s A Beautiful Morning is, in my humble opinion at least, one of the most beautiful and sublime songs to start the day with. It is, essentially, the perfect classic rock song to start the morning with. The most upbeat soundtrack of the morning routine if you will as well, performed by a group of mighty talented musicians.

Below you can listen to other personal favourite songs from their discography (including two live versions from the legendary Ed Sullivan Show). Thank you very much for your time, attention, and readership! All the best, take care, stay safe, and rock on!

On a personal note, I must also mention the fact that I have very fond memories with the beautiful and touching song It’s A Beautiful Morning as this song helped me a great deal during a recovery period in 2019 (when I was still a BSc student living in Aalborg, Denmark) after a series of physical health problems. I’ll always be very grateful and never forget the significant positive impact this song had on me back then. Thank you so much, The Rascals, for your great, timeless music!
