Steve Vai – A Legendary American Guitarist

Steven ‘Stevie’ Siro Vai was born on 6 June 1960 in Carle Place, Nassau County, New York, United States of America (USA) and is one of the mos talented and technical guitarists in the world. Throughout his amazing musical career, Steve Vai collaborated or played with the great Frank Zappa, Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth (the first lead singer of Van Halen), Whitesnake, Public Image Ltd. He is one of the most famous students of another legendary American guitarist, more specifically Joe Satriani (with whom he has collaborated over the years, most notably as part of G3 tours, a great friendship bonding the two fantastic musicians as well).

In 1978, he started his musical career as a transcriptionist and, later on, ‘stunt guitarist’ in Frank Zappa’s band with whom he had performed between 1980 and 1983. Frank Zappa needed an exceptional guitarist who could play intricate melodies that no other guitarist at that time could and Steve Vai fulfilled this role extremely well! Subsequently, Zappa’s influence from these two important formative years would leave an indelible mark on Steve Vai’s solo musical career, particularly his first studio album entitled Flexable (which was released in January, 1984). This particular LP was a mixture of progressive rock, instrumental rock, and experimental rock. After graduating from the ‘Zappa University’, Steve Vai moved on to other bands throughout the 1980s before establishing himself as one of the most important and technical instrumental rock guitarists in the world during the early 1990s.

A wonderful and fascinating virtuoso, Steve Vai kept on evolving on a grand musical scale throughout the passage of time, always searching and exploring new musical horizons and surpassing his limits. He can play both rhythm and lead guitar very well and he is widely known for his complex technique, ranging from legato (which includes hammer-ons and pull-offs), palm muting, and tapping. He is also a very fast shredder. He had released 11 solo studio albums and sold more than 15 million copies of these records worldwide. He is widely known for his signature Ibanez guitars, sometimes using double neck and even triple neck guitars (and yes, they are the real thing, they are not only nice to look at), especially live.

A significant part of his solo music draws inspiration from spirituality, esotericism, and mythology, namely from the Upanishads, Indian mythology, ancient Greek mythology, or the mysterious Urantia Book. As other rock and jazz fusion musicians (for example Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, or Jaco Pastorius), Steve Vai has been fascinated by the Urantia Book, a truly impressive spiritual book. The influence the Urantia Book had on Steve’s music can be explored in the songs Little Green Men from his debut solo studio album released in 1984 as well as Midway Creatures from Real Illusions: Reflections released in 1985. In point of fact, so profound was the influence of this mysterious esoteric book in Steve’s life and musical career that the initial name of his independent label was Urantia Records (which eventually had to be changed, but that’s another story).

Steve is married to bassist Pia Maiocco (of Vixen fame) and has two children, more specifically Fire Vai and Julian Angel Vai. In his spare time, one of his hobbies is apiculture and he even has a home-made brand called Fire Garden Honey. He either gives jars of honey from his garden to his friends or sells them for charity causes which is very beautiful! Two other of hobbies of his are architecture as well as home interior and design.

His solo studio albums are the following ones:

  • Flex-Able (1984)
  • Passion and Warfare (1990)
  • Sex & Religion (1993)
  • Fire Garden (1996)
  • Flex-Able Leftovers (1998)
  • The Ultra Zone (1999)
  • Real Illusions: Reflections (2005)
  • The Story of Light (2012)
  • Modern Primitive (2016)
  • Inviolate (2022)
  • Vai/Gash (2023)

He had also released two EPs (i.e. extended plays), namely:

Below you can listen to some of my most favourite songs from his enchanting solo discography. Thank you very much for your time, attention, and readership! All the best, take care, stay safe, and rock on!

Moral of the next song: we might be human, but we’re still animals and… walking the final path between Pagan and Christian.

The following song was partially inspired by the Urantia Book and is dedicated to Nina Hagen.

I love the following song so much! I’ve been listening to it since my early teenage years and I will continue to do so for the rest of my life!

Another catchy but lesser known musical gem which is certainly Zappa-inspired by mastro Vai:

I’ll give you three guesses who actually inspired the following very beautiful song:

Even during a recovery and with one arm, Steve Vai proved that he is one of the most amazing, gifted, and technical guitarists in the world and in the history of music in general:

This song is about peace and love and good happiness stuff:

The following very beautiful song is dedicated to Steve Vai’s sisters:

Moral of the next fantastic song: I will discover the secrets of love.

P.S. I truly hope I convinced you of the fact that Steve is one of the most talented and technical guitarists in the world and in the history of music in general as well as that he is in a league of his own (not that this wasn’t plain obvious to many of you out there, but still). Last but not least, I was very lucky to see maestro Steve Vai live in Bucharest, Romania when I was only 13, more specifically back in December, 2010 at Sala Polivalentă (a concert in which he performed backed by an orchestra as well). It was the second concert of an international artist that I attended in my home country, Romania (the first one being a concert of Jan Garbarek, also in Bucharest, one year earlier in 2009). I also have two videos from the respective concert still on my YouTube channel which you can watch below if you’d like.

Bonus facts about Steve:

  • He also starred in several films. One prominent role he had was Jack Butler (or the devil’s guitarist) in the well-known film Crossroads (1986).
  • He published a book titled Vaideology, Basic Music Theory for Guitar Players which you can purchase here on his official website if you’d like.

P.S. Important bonus fact: Steve Vai is a really cool beekeeper as well, as you can see below.
