Canned Heat – A Great American Classic Rock Band

Canned Heat is a great American classic rock band founded in 1965 in Los Angeles, California. Their music is a mixture of blues rock, boogie rock, and psychedelic rock. The band is significantly rooted in the blues genre, being established two fans of the blues music, more specifically co-lead vocalist, composer, and guitarist Alan Wilson (known alternatively under his nickname ‘Blind Owl’ who also played harmonica in the group) and co-lead vocalist, multi-instrumentalist Bob Hite (alternatively known under his nickname ‘The Bear’). Bob Hite was a multi-instrumentalist who had good command on flute, harmonica, guitar, and bass.

The name of the band was inspired by the song Canned Heat Blues by American delta blues guitarist Tommy Johnson. Furthermore, the original line-up of the band consisted of members of a community of blues collectors. The band was therefore formed out of longtime love for the blues music. Canned Heat was one of the most important classic rock bands of the 1960s. They are best known for three international hits, namely Going Up the Country, On the Road Again, and Let’s Work Together, all of them timeless musical masterpieces enjoyed by rock audiences from many generations. Another noteworthy song released as a single by the band is the (delta) blues classic/standard Rollin’ and Tumblin’ (a cover of the band; the original song was initially recorded for the first time by the American artist Hambone Willie Newbern way back in 1929).

Throughout the passage of time, the band’s members changed as they were, unfortunately, hit by two tragedies: the death of Alan Wilson in 1970 and then the death of Bob Hite in 1981. The only member who played with the band back in the late 1960s who is still performing with the group is drummer and vocalist Adolfo ‘Fito’ de la Parra. Over the decades, they released a total number of 18 studio albums (their highest-charting ones being the ones released during the late 1960s). P.S. I initially discovered this band when I was in my late teens and since then I continued listening to them. Their songs are staples of classic rock so how could’ve I possibly not? They were especially good ‘musical companions’ during some of my tough times abroad as an international student throughout the late 2010s in Aalborg, Denmark when I was physically ill and in a recovery process.
