Toad the Wet Sprocket is a great American alternative rock band from Santa Barbara, California which was formed back in 1986. The band’s name is a clear Monty Python reference written by British comedian Eric Idle. The Monty Python reference pinpoints to the sketch Rock Notes in which a namesake band is presented in a fictional music news report (allegedly doing great in Finland and planning to tour Iceland as well). The irony of fate is that the author of the Monty Python comedy sketch didn’t believe anyone would use the name of his imagined band… until 1999, when he heard Toad the Wet Sprocket on the radio while he was driving (once again, how ironic life can be sometimes, right?). Before they performed live for the first time, the American band did not yet agree back then on their name so they decided to adopt the moniker which they previously knew from the Rock Notes sketch by Monty Python. Below you can listen to Eric Idle reflecting on and reciting the comedy sketch he previously wrote that includes the name of this alternative rock band:

The band enjoyed popularity back in the 1990s with several hits, more specifically Walk on the Ocean (quite a touching song) released as a single in 1992, a most favourite song of mine from their discography, Good Intentions, Fall Down, All I Want, or Something’s Always Wrong. They were initially musically active between 1986 and 1998, then briefly in 2002, once more between 2006 and 2007, and since 2010 onwards. Throughout their relatively long musical career, the American alternative rock band released 7 studio albums to date, the last one entitled Starting Now back in 2021. The lead vocalist of the band is Glen Phillips who is also a multi-instrumentalist, being able to play on guitar, mandolin, and keyboards as well. For the most part, Toad the Wet Sprocket’s line-up still consists of its original members who, aside from Glen Phillips, are Dean Dinning (bass, backing vocals, keyboards, and rhythm guitar) and Todd Nichols (lead guitar, mandolin, and backing vocals). The drummer, Randy Guss, had to unfortunately retire from the band in 2020 because of personal medical problems.
The two most commercially-successful studio albums of the band are Fear from 1991 and Dulcinea from 1994, both receiving platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA for short). Below you can listen to my most favourite song from their entire discography, more specifically Walk on the Ocean (which I discovered back in 2019 when I was still living in Aalborg, Denmark as an international student at Aalborg University while browsing for some relaxing music on YouTube in my spare time in my student dorm room):
